Fuck! What have I done? I know I shouldn’t have said what I did about wanting to kiss Francesca in the trees and I shouldn’t have taken her in my arms when she answered the way she did, but I couldn’t help it. I am drawn to Francesca like a moth to the light. As soon as I suggested we step outside the center I was lost. What the hell was I thinking? And now I’ve held her in my arms and know how she responded it’s going to be harder than ever to resist her.

But I can’t leave Caroline. I promised to marry her for fuck’s sake and I don’t make promises I don’t keep. Besides, I love Caroline, don’t I? I try and remember why I love her, all the good things about her, how she looks, her energy, the way she gives as good as she gets when we argue, and her sense of the ridiculous, how she makes me laugh, and that helps.

I try and imagine how we’ll be in the future when we’re old and gray but I can’t. Maybe no one can when they are just about to get married and I’m expecting too much. No matter what, I know Caroline is my future and I need to get my head around it and stop fucking everything up with this thing I have for Francesca, whatever that is. I don’t know what she does to me when I’m around her. I have to stay away, but somehow I can’t.

I hope we can get back to how we were—just client and bodyguard until this assignment is over. And I hope it’s over soon before I go crazy.

Francesca is perfectly calm at breakfast and I breathe a sigh of relief. She blushes a bit when I go in and say “Good morning” to everyone, but I think we’ll get over it. And we have work to do. There are twenty-five little mouths to feed and then we need to make sure the kids are washed and dressed, teeth brushed and hair combed.

Most of them are capable of doing this for themselves, but they need some help to cope with lost socks, spills, and squabbles. So I’m busy and not worrying about last night, but every time I look at Francesca among all that commotion, while Lisa and Gordon clear away the breakfast things, I want to touch her and kiss her again, and sometimes I catch her looking at me and I can’t look away.

I have to get a grip on myself. I have to.

It’s raining today so we have to make the most of all the indoor games at the center. The kids are boisterous, but no trouble to keep amused. It’s as if no one ever has time to play games with them normally. Perhaps they don’t. It must be difficult being a parent who is exhausted by illness or who has to work every hour to keep food on the table and then find time and energy to play.
